Every Marvel fan knows the feeling. A favorite hero returns, but something has changed, and you’re not sure how to feel. Ahead of Avengers: Doomsday, co-director Anthony Russo has admitted that this balancing act is one of the hardest parts of the job.
If you want to see how the film came together, Avengers: Doomsday has a full production history on Wikipedia. For more superhero coverage, visit our latest entertainment updates.
Avengers: Doomsday- Russo’s Big Takeaways
| Topic | What Russo Said |
|---|---|
| The challenge | Balancing story progress with respect for beloved characters can be very difficult |
| The method | The filmmakers rely on their own instincts, because they love the characters like fans do |
| On fandom | Fans don’t speak with a single voice |
| The goal | Surprise themselves first, so audiences are surprised too |
| Where he spoke | A Q&A at the 92nd Street Y after an Avengers: Endgame Encore screening |
Trusting Instinct Over Noise
Russo explained that opinions about Marvel characters vary wildly. Different fans respond to different characters and different versions of them, so chasing one “fan opinion” is impossible. Instead, he and his brother Joe lean on their own love for the characters and their history. Yahoo!
There’s something reassuring in that. The people steering these films describe themselves as fans first, and they say they respect the storytelling journey these characters have already taken. But they also want to keep asking where those characters could go next.
The Robert Downey Jr. Gamble
The clearest test of this philosophy is casting Robert Downey Jr. as Victor Von Doom. Tony Stark had a powerful ending in Endgame, sacrificing himself to save the world, so bringing the actor back in a very different role is a huge risk. Yahoo!
Russo framed it as a question of challenging themselves while staying faithful to the path the story has already traveled. The goal is a villain who feels fresh without erasing the emotional weight of Tony’s farewell.
What’s Happening Around the Film?
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Film | Avengers: Doomsday |
| Release date | December 18 |
| Directors | Anthony and Joe Russo |
| Villain | Robert Downey Jr. as Victor Von Doom |
| Re-release | Endgame Encore adds four new scenes connecting to Doomsday |
| Cast status | The full cast hasn’t been announced yet |
Endgame Encore Is Part of the Setup
The re-release isn’t just nostalgia. One new scene extends Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter’s ending, with Loki arriving at their home in his TVA attire, and it leaves questions about Steve’s timeline open. Joe Russo has also said Endgame is “required” viewing to understand Doomsday, so a rewatch is a smart move before December. Netflix JunkieAsiaOne
A Cast So Big It Confuses Its Own Director
Russo joked that the ensemble is so large that even he gets confused about who has and hasn’t been announced. That tells you how big this crossover is. It also hints that surprises are still waiting. United States
Will Fans Be Convinced?
Marvel has taken creative swings before. A recent trailer showed a much more serious Thor than the one in Love and Thunder, a film that divided fans who found the character too silly. Russo’s comments read like a response to that kind of debate: change is unavoidable, but it should come from respect. United States
Whether audiences agree will only be clear when the film arrives. Until then, expect plenty of theories and rewatches. Follow our movie news section for more updates.
