Assi Box Office: Taapsee Pannu’s Courtroom Drama Closes at Rs 10 Crore — A Painful Flop for a Good Film

There’s something genuinely sad about a well-intentioned film failing at the box office — and Assi is exactly that story. Directed by Anubhav Sinha and led by Taapsee Pannu, the courtroom drama received a warm reception from those who watched it. But audiences just didn’t show up in the numbers that mattered, and the film has now quietly limped to the end of its theatrical run with a closing collection of around Rs 10 crore nett — a deeply disappointing result for one of Bollywood’s most respected director-actor duos.

Assi Final Box Office — Complete Week-by-Week Breakdown

How Did This Happen?

Taapsee Pannu and Anubhav Sinha previously collaborated on Thappad (2020), which collected around Rs 30 crore at the box office — making Assi‘s Rs 10 crore haul roughly one-third of that benchmark. The drop is significant and telling.

The film’s week-by-week decline tells the familiar story of a movie that couldn’t convert good reviews into footfalls:

• Week 1 started promisingly at Rs 6.50 crore but was never close to breakeven territory
• Week 2 saw a sharp fall to Rs 2.45 crore — the kind of drop that signals word-of-mouth wasn’t spreading fast enough
• Week 3 hit a near-dead Rs 90 lakh, with roughly Rs 70 lakh coming only from the weekend

Despite critical praise and an ensemble cast including Kani Kusruti, Revathy, Manoj Pahwa, Kumud Mishra, and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, the film couldn’t command the audience attention it deserved.

Why Did Assi Fail at the Box Office?

The film’s subject matter — a gripping courtroom drama — has historically been a tough sell in India without a marquee male lead or a major marketing push. Anubhav Sinha’s socially conscious filmography (Mulk, Thappad, Bheed) consistently earns critical acclaim but struggles to cross the commercial threshold. Assi appears to be the latest chapter in that pattern.

The verdict is clear: a flop, despite genuine merit in the filmmaking.

Will OTT Save Assi?

Possibly. Critically appreciated films like Thappad and Bheed found second lives on streaming platforms, and Assi — with its strong performances and courtroom tension — could find the appreciative audience it deserved once it hits digital. Watch this space.
