Apple Pay Is Finally Launching in India This October

It’s been a long wait, but Apple is reportedly closing the gap. Apple Pay is set to launch in India by October 2026, according to a Business Standard report, giving the company its first real foothold in one of the world’s largest digital payments markets.

Why This Has Taken So Long

Apple Pay already runs in over 90 markets globally, yet India — a country that processes billions of digital transactions every month — has remained conspicuously absent. The delay largely comes down to India’s UPI-dominated ecosystem, plus ongoing negotiations between Apple and card issuers over transaction fees. That backdrop makes this launch a genuinely significant moment, one worth tracking alongside our broader Apple India coverage.

What Apple Pay Will Support at Launch

The rollout will initially focus on credit cards riding global networks, using the same underlying framework Apple runs in other countries — meaning iPhone and Apple Watch users will be able to add cards to Apple Wallet and tap to pay at compatible terminals from day one.

The UPI Question

The most notable gap is no UPI support at launch. To offer it, Apple would need clearance from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and a partnership with a sponsor bank to route transactions — a process that takes time even for established players. Apple is reportedly working toward this, but it won’t be ready when the service first goes live.

For those wanting the regulatory side of the story, NPCI’s own guidelines on UPI ecosystem participation explain exactly what a foreign payments provider needs to clear before integrating.

Why It Still Matters

Even without UPI, launching credit-card-based payments puts Apple in India’s premium card segment — an audience that skews toward exactly the kind of iPhone-heavy user base Apple already has locked in. Reports suggest Apple is negotiating a share of interchange fees with banks, positioning this as a genuine new revenue stream, not just a convenience feature. It’s a strategy shift worth watching alongside our fintech and services coverage.

The Bigger Picture

Apple Pay’s India debut, even in this limited form, signals the company is finally serious about closing a years-long gap in one of its biggest smartphone markets. Whether UPI support follows quickly will determine how meaningfully it can compete with Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm. Keep following our Apple news section as October approaches.
