Apple‘s made-in-America Mac story just got its biggest addition. Apple COO Sabih Khan confirmed during a Wall Street Journal facility tour that Mac mini manufacturing will begin at a Foxconn facility in Houston, Texas later in 2026 — making it the first mainstream Apple desktop to be assembled in the United States. The announcement was timed to coincide with President Trump’s State of the Union address on February 24, and is directly tied to Apple’s tariff mitigation strategy.

Why This Is a Bigger Deal Than the Mac Pro Precedent

Apple has technically been making a Mac in America since 2013 — the Mac Pro, first in Austin, Texas. But the Mac Pro is a niche workstation selling in the tens of thousands annually. The Mac mini sells in the hundreds of thousands annually, possibly more — Khan’s “thousands every week” comment alone implies over 50,000 units per year at minimum, and the realistic number is likely higher.

Manufacturing the Mac mini in Houston changes the calculus because it’s a genuinely mass-market product. If Apple can demonstrate that a high-volume consumer device can be assembled domestically without dramatic price increases, it validates the entire US manufacturing thesis beyond one premium outlier.

The tariff pressure is the honest commercial driver here. Apple faces new tariff exposure after a Supreme Court ruling struck down previous exemptions on imported goods. Vietnam and China — where the Mac mini is currently made — are both subject to elevated import duties in 2026. Shifting assembly to Houston, even if most components still come from Asia, meaningfully reduces Apple’s tariff liability on finished goods, because tariffs apply at the point of final assembly.

The WSJ tour also showed footage inside GlobalWafers’ Arizona facility and TSMC’s Arizona chip fabs — both part of Apple’s silicon supply chain. Apple is clearly building a narrative of domestic manufacturing depth that extends from wafer production through chip fabrication through device assembly, even if none of those stages are yet fully US-based at scale.
