Sometimes Netflix drops a film that doesn’t quite fit any box — not a full tearjerker, not a pure romance, not a conventional music biopic — and yet it somehow pulls you in anyway. A Beautiful Life is exactly that kind of film. Released on Netflix in June 2023, this Danish musical drama is equal parts love story, grief meditation, and star-making vehicle — with an original soundtrack that genuinely earns its place in the story.

What Is A Beautiful Life About?
Danish pop superstar Christopher — known for chart-topping records across Europe and Asia — steps into his first leading film role as Elliott, a young fisherman with a voice that stops time. When a high-profile music manager (Christine Albeck Borge) discovers him, Elliott is thrust into a world of spotlights, record deals, and emotional landmines.
At the centre of it all is his budding romance with Lilly (Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas), the manager’s estranged daughter and music producer. Their creative chemistry is real — warm, tender, and genuinely moving. But Elliott’s rise to fame carries weight from the past: absent parents, a haunting family legacy, and the psychological cost of sudden stardom.
Christopher himself described the title track as being born from a deeply personal moment — learning his wife was pregnant with their first child. That rawness translates onto screen when the film lets it breathe.
What Works and What Doesn’t
| ✅ Works Well | ❌ Could Be Better |
|---|---|
| Elliott & Lilly’s quiet, intimate scenes | Tonal shift during the fame arc feels jarring |
| All 9 original songs — beautifully constructed | Supporting character Patrick is overused and underdeveloped |
| Christopher’s screen presence and vocal performance | Familiar rise-to-fame clichés resurface too often |
| The cautionary tale of Lilly’s late musician father | Pacing loses momentum in the second half |
Should You Actually Watch It?
If you loved Purple Hearts, CODA, or A Star Is Born, A Beautiful Life belongs on your watchlist — just go in knowing it’s imperfect. The songs alone — which had already crossed half a million streams on Spotify before wider attention — make the runtime worthwhile. Christopher’s performance won’t win awards, but his charm and vocal command carry the film through its weaker stretches.
It’s not a film that lingers long after the credits roll, but while it’s playing, it earns genuine emotional moments.
