TVS launched its all new 300cc engine at the ongoing MotoSoul 2024, which goes by the name RT-XD4 and has been entirely developed in-house at its R&D facility located in Hosur. This launch showcases the engineering capability of the company.
TVS Unveils 300cc RT-XD4 Engine – Could Power Upcoming Apache RTX ADV Bike in Mid-2025
The RT-XD4 engine has a 299 cc displacement, a tad less than the current RT-XD engine’s 312.12 cc displacement. With a bore and a stroke of 78 mm and 62.6 mm respectively, it produces 35.45 PS and 28.5 Nm. The engine comes mated to a 6-speed transmission and a slipper clutch. The head is liquid-cooled while the crankcases are air-oil-cooled for better cooling.
The RT-XD4 is based on a new platform and comes with a dual overhead camshaft attached to a down-draft port. It also comes with a split chamber crankcase dual oil pump for better performance. The engine is cooled thanks to its dual cooling jacket cylinder head, which comes with a water jacket. There is also a double breather system to cut oil contamination and oil consumption.
Although the RT-XD4 engine may be a smaller 312.12 cc unit (making 35.6 PS and 28.7 Nm), the two are similarly specced. But the 2024 RT-XD4’s updated architecture and linear torque delivery could provide better overall performance and potentially smoother riding experience. There’s also the possibility of a lighter engine reducing the power-to-weight ratio and possibly enabling better fuel economy, too. The new engine’s design might also comply with stricter emission controls and production costs.
While TVS has not announced when the RT-XD4 engine will go into production, the company has filed for a trademark on the name “TVS Apache RTX.” Spy shots indicate that a new 300cc ADV motorcycle, most likely with this engine, is undergoing final testing. The bike could be launched around mid-2025 and will further expand the 300cc portfolio of TVS Motor, which already consists of the likes of the RTR 310 and the Apache RR 310.
