Tabu Joins “Dune: Prophecy” in Recurring Role

Originally titled “Dune: The Sisterhood” when commissioned in 2019, the series draws inspiration from the novel “Sisterhood of Dune” penned by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. Positioned in the vast universe of ‘Dune’ by Frank Herbert, the series unfolds 10,000 years before Paul Atreides’s reign, focusing on two Harkonnen sisters navigating existential threats to humanity while laying the groundwork for the renowned Bene Gesserit sect.

The official logline states, “Set within the expansive universe of ‘Dune,’ created by acclaimed author Frank Herbert, and 10,000 years before the ascension of Paul Atreides, ‘Dune: Prophecy’ follows two Harkonnen sisters as they combat forces that threaten the future of humankind, and establish the fabled sect that will become known as the Bene Gesserit.”

Despite lacking a confirmed premiere date, the series recently secured the esteemed Indian actress Tabu for the recurring role of Sister Francesca. Described as resilient, intelligent, and captivating, Sister Francesca’s return to the palace disrupts the established power dynamics, stirring intrigue and tension.

The character is described as “Strong, intelligent, and alluring, Sister Francesca leaves a lasting impression in her wake. Once a great love of the Emperor, her return to the palace strains the balance of power in the capital.”

Tabu’s illustrious career in Indian cinema, marked by two National Film Awards for Best Actress and numerous accolades, encompasses a diverse range of memorable performances in films such as “Maachis,” “Chandni Bar,” “Cheeni Kum,” “Haider,” and “Andhadhun.” Additionally, her international credits include notable roles in “Life of Pi,” “The Namesake,” and the BBC miniseries “A Suitable Boy.” She is represented by Neon Kite and United Agents.

“Dune: Prophecy” will feature a star-studded cast including Emily Watson, Olivia Williams, Travis Fimmel, Johdi May, Mark Strong, Sarah-Sofie Boussnina, Josh Heuston, Chloe Lea, Jade Anouka, Faoileann Cunningham, Edward Davis, Aoife Hinds, Chris Mason, and Shalom Brune-Franklin. The series has undergone a lengthy journey to production, marked by multiple changes in showrunners and a creative overhaul in 2023.

Alison Schapker takes the helm as showrunner and executive producer, with Diane Ademu-John co-developing the series and serving as executive producer. Anna Foerster joins as an executive producer and directs several episodes, including the premiere. Jordan Goldberg, Mark Tobey, John Cameron, Matthew King, Scott Z. Burns, and Jon Spaihts are also on board as executive producers. Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt, and Kim Herbert represent the Frank Herbert estate as executive producers, while Anderson serves as co-producer. The series is a co-production between Max and Legendary Television, with Legendary also handling the film franchise.

Following the release of two “Dune” films, the franchise has collectively amassed over $1.1 billion in box office revenue, with “Dune: Part Two” slated for a theatrical debut in March. Plans are already underway for a third installment in the franchise.

“Dune: Part Two” Continues Box Office Dominance

Meanwhile, Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part Two” continues to dominate the box office, having already generated $630 million in global ticket sales. Led by Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, and a stellar lineup of Hollywood A-listers, the sequel stands as the highest-grossing film of 2024. In this installment, Chalamet’s portrayal of Paul Atreides sees him embracing his role as the prophesied chosen one, seeking vengeance against those responsible for his family’s downfall. Villeneuve’s initial “Dune” release in 2021 amassed $402 million in worldwide box office revenue.
