AIFF are set to introduce VAR to the ISL and the I-League from the 2025/26 season, as revealed by multiple sources. The technology has been widespread since its introduction in 2016/17 through European football.Â
The main drawbacks have been the training of referees and technology to implement it in India. But, measures are now being taken to train officials and improve the technology so that the standard of the sport can be raised in the country.
AIFF to introduce VAR in ISL and I-League from 2025Â
“There will be a big decision on the introduction of VAR very soon and we are doing a study on that,” AIFF acting general secretary M Satyanarayan told PTI in an interview.
“Introducing it next season might be difficult for the simple reason that FIFA has to approve the technology, there is a process. More than just getting the equipment, training personnel takes a lot of time. It can be the 2025-2026 season, but you never know. Even if we start now (the process), it will take a minimum of 18 to 20 months (to complete it).”
The implementation of VAR would also involve increased costs for the AIFF, but would help referees make correct decisions on the pitch.
However, taking into account the controversy surrounding the technology’s use in the Premier League, Indian referees would have to be trained thoroughly to avoid making the same mistakes.
