Counter Strike 2: Valve files trademark for CS2

Counter Strike’s on the video game industry is difficult to quantify. After all, it was the inspiration for games like Call of Duty and Battlefield, ushering in the global dominance of online first-person shooter games. With CS:GO, we received a more modern and refined version of the game, which remains as popular as ever. However, it appears that Valve is now ready to take the genre-defining series to the next level.

Rumblings of a new CS game have been circulating since early March, and the most recent development appears to be Valve’s trademark filing for ‘CS2’. It all started when journalist Richard Lewis spoke with developers who claimed Counter Strike 2 is real and coming soon. Following that, files for the rumoured CS:GO 2 leaked as a Dota 2 update that included references to CS:GO on Source 2 within its code.

This latest development is possibly the most solid evidence that Valve is working on a new Counter Strike project, though it’s still unclear what it is.

Valve filed a trademark application for ‘CS2’ with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. This was accompanied by two related serial numbers, which appear to be linked to Counter Strike and CSGO.

There are two major hypotheses about what Valve is up to. The first, and most anticipated, is the conversion of CS:GO to the Source 2 engine. However, as suggested by this filing, Valve may be working on an entirely new game called ‘CS2’. According to the filing, Valve may drop the ‘Global Offensive’ moniker in favour of Counter Strike 2. Gabe Newell, on the other hand, is good at keeping secrets, and we may only learn the truth when he wants us to.
