According to a Business Standard survey, in India’s electronics sector, Apple has emerged as the employer of choice for blue-collar workers. Over the course of the last 19 months, the company has created over 100,000 new direct jobs, mostly thanks to its significant local vendors and their components and parts suppliers.
Apple’s production in India is paying off in the country
The positions were filled as a result of the government’s PLI (Production Linked Incentive) program, which aims to support regional industry and generate employment prospects.
Sixty percent of the new jobs have been created, with the lion’s share going to the three suppliers who assemble iPhones: Foxconn Hon Hai, Pegatron, and Wistron. Foxconn is credited with creating 35,500 of the 100,000 jobs. The second-largest employer, Pegatron, which began production this fiscal year, now employs 14,000 people.
According to the data, the number exceeds Apple’s pledge to create new jobs under the program in the second year by about 7,000. In terms of the fiscal year, the corporation has one month left. According to the research, suppliers of parts and chargers as well as Apple’s ecosystem have created an extra 40,000 employees.
When the PLI plan was implemented in August 2021, most of the new employees have been produced. The government must receive monthly reports from the vendors about their employment figures. The increase in jobs is visible throughout the whole Apple ecosystem, in addition to the three main manufacturers in India.
According to reports, Tata Electronics, Apple’s primary component supplier for mechanical parts, has a sizable workforce in the supply chain. With almost 11,000 personnel, Salcomp is one of the other contributors. According to government estimates, the PLI program would generate 200,000 direct jobs overall over the course of five years.
In accordance with a government press release from October 6, 2020, it was predicted that the smartphone PLI scheme would generate 2 lakh direct jobs overall over the course of five years. It is evident that the industry is, largely thanks to the Apple ecosystem, well on its way to reaching the goal.
Additionally, according to government estimates, the manufacturing of electronics generates approximately three times as many indirect jobs as it does direct jobs. The survey estimates that the Apple ecosystem will, directly and indirectly, support close to 3 lakh jobs. Over a period of seven years, mobile device manufacturers and their suppliers are estimated to have directly and indirectly produced over two million jobs, according to the India Cellular and Electronics Association.
