NVIDIA GeForce MX550 discrete-GPU has a hard time performing against AMD RDNA 2 ‘Radeon 680M’ Integrated GPU

The GeForce MX550 discrete GPU from NVIDIA has been tested, and it just edges out an AMD RDNA 2 ‘Radeon 680M’ integrated GPU. The Turing TU117 GPU is used by the NVIDIA GeForce MX550. The chip has a cut-down version with 1024 CUDA cores, a clock rate of up to 1320 MHz, a 2 GB GDDR6 memory interface running across a 64-bit bus at 12 Gbps speeds, and a TDP of 25W, according to the information we received earlier. Even though the GPU is based on the Turing processor, it lacks RT and DLSS capabilities because it uses a GPU that is a step below the RTX offerings.

The Ryzen 6000 APUs use AMD Radeon 600M series integrated GPUs, which are based on the RDNA 2 graphics architecture and feature up to 12 Compute Units for 768 cores and 2.4 GHz GPU rates. The Radeon 600M GPUs have a 50% larger compute engine, 50% higher bandwidth, double the L2 cache, and twice the render backends (RB+) than the early Vega iGPUs.

The Radeon 600M is divided into two SKUs: the Radeon 680M, which is found on Ryzen 9 and Ryzen 7 CPUs and has 12 CU and 2.4 GHz (4 RB+) configuration. This evaluation covered AMD’s Ryzen 7 6800H, which offers a 2.2 GHz Radeon 680M instead of the full 2.4 GHz seen on high-end HX components. With up to 6 CUs, 1.9 GHz speeds, and 2 Render backends, the Radeon 660M drives the Ryzen 5 APUs. Within these benchmarks, both chips were put to the test.

So, in terms of speed, the AMD Radeon 680M was 25% quicker in 3DMark Fire Strike, 5% faster in Time Spy, and because it has ray tracing capabilities, unlike the NVIDIA discrete GPU, it easily won the Port Royal benchmark. Meanwhile, the Radeon 660M, with half the processing units, could only match an Intel Alder Lake Core i7-1280P CPU with Iris Xe graphics in terms of performance.

Moving from synthetic to gameplay benchmarks, a variety of AAA and eSports titles were evaluated at 1080p. The AMD Radeon 680M iGPU outperformed the NVIDIA GeForce MX550 in 9 of the 14 games. In a total of 13 out of 14 games, the Radeon 660M outperformed the Intel Iris Xe iGPU.

Despite its discrete and higher TDP design, the NVIDIA GeForce MX550 was only able to outperform the Radeon 680M, AMD’s integrated solution for the Ryzen 7 6800H, by 5%. The Ryzen 5 6600H was able to outperform Intel’s Iris Xe iGPU by 39 per cent. The 2.4 GHz Radeon 680M can even outperform the GeForce MX550, which is astounding considering it’s an integrated chip vs. a separate GPU that uses roughly 35W of power.
