Final Fantasy XVI for PS5 delayed due to COVID-19

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has caused the development of Final Fantasy XVI for PlayStation 5 to be delayed by about six months, according to the game’s producer.

Producer Naoki Yoshida promised earlier this year that more information about the upcoming next instalment in the Final Fantasy series would be released later this year, but in a new lengthy message, Yoshida has stated that the team is unable to keep that promise due to complications resulting from the ongoing global coronavirus pandemic. In addition, the producer has disclosed that the title’s development has been postponed by nearly six months.

“When we last spoke, I promised I would have more information on Final Fantasy XVI sometime later in 2021”, Yoshida writes. “However, I regret to inform you that I will be unable to keep that promise as complications stemming from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic have delayed the game’s development by almost a half year.”

Yoshida also stated that more information about the highly anticipated title will be released between the end of March and the end of June 2022 in his statement.

“So that leaves us with the question, when can we expect the next round of information? Well, I am happy to announce the current plan is to conduct our next big reveal in Spring of 2022 as we seek to build excitement leading up to the game’s eventual release.”

We recommend reading Yoshida’s entire statement because it includes details on measurements made this year for the game’s production as well as working from home due to COVID-19.

The release date for Final Fantasy XVI has yet to be announced. Last year, the game was announced as a timed-console exclusive for Sony’s next-generation console, the PlayStation 5. As soon as we hear more about the game, we’ll let you know.
