Sony CFO Lin Tao confirmed the company has already secured the minimum memory supply needed for the October–December 2026 holiday season, and plans further supplier negotiations to maintain that buffer. But the real story is what comes next.

What “Monetising the Installed Base” Actually Means for You

In plain English: Sony plans to make more money from people who already own a PS5 rather than raising the console’s sticker price. The company’s goal is to grow software and network services revenue by prioritising monetisation of the installed base — and the most obvious lever is PlayStation Plus.

Sony raised PS Plus prices in 2023, and PlayStation Plus significantly contributed to quarterly results as the shift to higher subscription tiers continued. Another hike — particularly on the Extra and Premium tiers — looks increasingly likely. Game prices creeping toward $80, tighter discounting during sales events, and more aggressive live-service pushes are also on the table.

With GTA 6 launching in November 2026 and the PS5 now nearly six years old, Sony is betting it can ride software momentum rather than hardware volume through to the PS6 — which analysts don’t expect before 2028.

According to a report, Sony’s operating income still rose 19% despite the hardware sales dip, validating the software-first pivot.
