Gerard Pique’s decision to take a reduced pay this season has benefited Barcelona a lot. Owing to the fact that the Blaugrana club was struggling to register their new signings Eric Garcia, Memphis Depay and Sergio Aguero.
Pique’s pay cut along with the departure of five players from the Spanish club has helped Barça to register Memphis Depay and Eric Garcia. As a result, Depay and Garcia managed to play in Barça’s opening La Liga game against Real Sociedad.
Meanwhile, Barcelona has not been able to register Sergio Aguero in the squad yet due to a lack of funds. However, there is sufficient time available because the final deadline to register players is by September 1 in La Liga.
Moreover, there is some good news for the Spanish giants as Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets have also agreed to take a pay cut. Therefore things will turn out smoothly and Aguero’s registration in the squad looks imminent.
Barcelona earn 40 million after departure of five players
The club allowed five players to leave during this summer transfer window in order to make the new signings register in the squad. Barcelona off-loaded Jean Clair Todibo, Carles Alena, Junior Firpo and Francisco Trincao to gain nearly 40 million euros.
The weekly wages of the above-mentioned players is not the highest as compared to Gerard Pique, Antoine Griezmann and several other top earning players. Therefore Barcelona could only use 25% of the amount earned from transfers that is 10 million euros to relieve their wage dilemmas.
How much did Barcelona earn from Pique’s wage reduction?
Gerard Pique used to earn around 38 million gross salary before accepting a 50% pay cut. This means that the Spanish defender will earn 19 million euros and the other half of his wages will be saved. Consequently, La Liga has allowed Barcelona to use 50% instead of the normal 25% from this savings. Hence Barça will be able to use 9.5 million euros for salaries and other expenses.
Therefore Barcelona have 19-20 million euros for the salaries of Garcia, Depay and Aguero. Moreover, with the salary cut of Roberto, Busquets and Alba, the Blaugarana club’s wage structure will improve.
