After years of uneven releases, Marvel Studios is changing its rhythm. Its next chapter, the Mutant Saga, doesn’t just bring the X-Men into the MCU. It also brings a steadier release schedule, and fans who struggled to keep up with the Multiverse Saga may welcome it.

What’s Changing?

The Mutant Saga arrives after Avengers: Secret Wars. Kevin Feige has described it as a soft reboot. It is built around the X-Men, who are being integrated into the MCU after Disney acquired the rights from 20th Century Fox.

The headline change is the schedule. Marvel is committing to three film releases per year in both 2028 and 2029. The releases are spread across summer and holiday windows, which could turn those periods into annual Marvel events.

Why Marvel Needed a Reset?

Recent output has been uneven:

  • 2023: three films
  • 2024: one film
  • 2025: three films
  • 2026: one film (Avengers: Doomsday)
  • 2027: one film (Avengers: Secret Wars)

Feige explained the thinking to Empire, saying that when quantity gets too high, projects get spread thin, and Marvel wants to avoid that. The studio is also trimming Disney+ output. That follows Bob Iger’s 2024 mandate for two or at most three films a year, and Wonder Man Season 2 has already been canceled.

Does the Three-a-Year Model Work?

History suggests it can. From 2017 to 2019, during the peak of the Infinity Saga, Marvel released three films a year, and every one was widely successful. Even the lowest earner, Ant-Man and the Wasp, made $622 million worldwide, while Captain Marvel easily passed the billion-dollar mark.

By contrast, the Multiverse Saga overloaded audiences. Many post-credits scenes were never revisited, and several new characters haven’t been seen since their debuts. A predictable calendar lets fans know what to expect each year.

Fresh Faces

Black Panther 3 was confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con, where Ryan Coogler and Feige introduced David Jonsson as the franchise’s next Black Panther. Ghost Rider was announced on the same stage, and the X-Men date was revealed at D23.
