For over a decade, Robert Downey Jr. was Tony Stark. So when Marvel handed him the hood and mask of Doctor Doom, everyone wanted to know: which role does he actually love more? At a candid D23 chat with Good Morning America, RDJ stopped dodging the question — and his answer says a lot about why actors crave villains.

What RDJ Actually Said

Sharing the stage with Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell, Downey admitted the shift from hero to villain rewired his entire on-set experience. For now, he’s team Doom. “It was really weird being the guy — everyone else is hanging out, they’re the good heroes, and I’m [in] this mask and this hood,” he explained, describing the strange isolation of playing the outsider for the first time.

Why This Casting Still Feels Wild

Downey’s Stark run began in 2008 and closed emotionally in Avengers: Endgame (2019) — a send-off so complete that his return felt almost unthinkable. Yet at San Diego Comic-Con 2024, Marvel confirmed he’d play Doctor Doom, the publisher’s most iconic supervillain, in the same universe he once saved. Marvel has since clarified this isn’t a Stark multiverse variant — it’s the genuine Victor Von Doom, giving RDJ a genuinely fresh character to sink into.

Avengers: Doomsday releases in theaters on December 18, 2026, with Avengers: Secret Wars to follow.
