Esports Nations Cup Hits Pause: Inaugural Riyadh Showdown Now a 2027 Story

Sometimes the biggest show of strength is knowing when to wait. The Esports Foundation (EF) has officially postponed the inaugural Esports Nations Cup (ENC), originally set for November 2026 in Riyadh, pushing the world’s first nation-vs-nation esports championship to November 2027.

Esports Nations Cup: Why the Delay, and What Stays the Same

EF cited an “ongoing assessment of the wider regional situation” and consultations with stakeholders as the reason behind the call. Given the tournament’s scale — teams from over 100 countries and territories — the foundation says giving everyone certainty mattered more than sticking to the original date. Importantly, Saudi Arabia isn’t stepping back from hosting duties; major sporting and entertainment events in the country continue as scheduled.

The Money and the Mission Aren’t Going Anywhere

Perhaps the most reassuring line for National Team Partners: every existing ENC Development Fund commitment stays intact. EF says its ecosystem-building work — talent pathways, publisher coordination, and national program development — continues uninterrupted through the transition year.

EF CEO Ralf Reichert framed the decision as a matter of respect for the movement ENC has already built. He said the response from partners, publishers, players, and communities showed how much potential the competition carries, and that delivering it “under the right conditions” was worth the wait. He was clear that hosting in Riyadh in 2027 doesn’t dilute the foundation’s commitment to the National Team Partners already investing in the vision.

What Comes Next

Over the coming weeks, EF will work directly with National Team Partners and publishers to clarify the revised competition calendar, qualification pathways, and broader implications of the new timeline.
