Monster’s First Female Villain Just Got A Release Date — And A Twist

All eight episodes of Monster Season 4 arrive globally on Netflix on Tuesday, September 17, 2026. Ella Beatty leads as Lizzie Borden, with Vicky Krieps as her maid and accomplice Bridget Sullivan, Charlie Hunnam as Andrew Borden, and Rebecca Hall as stepmother Abby Borden.

A Feminist, Darkly Comic Retelling

Unlike previous Monster seasons, this installment is being described by the cast as “Ryan Murphy does Cinderella.” Set in 1892 Massachusetts, it follows Lizzie Borden, who was accused — and ultimately acquitted — of murdering her father and stepmother with an axe, a case that has fascinated true crime audiences for over a century. Co-creator Ian Brennan told Vanity Fair the show leans into the theory that Lizzie and Bridget Sullivan shared a romantic relationship that fueled the murders, while also examining how society’s dismissive view of women shaped Lizzie’s acquittal.

The season also features modern needle drops from artists like Kate Bush and Wet Leg, alongside a surprise twist: Sarah Paulson returns to the Ryan Murphy universe to play serial killer Aileen Wuornos, hinting at a broader exploration of infamous female killers throughout history.
