The man behind America’s longest and most expensive manhunt is getting a fresh dramatization — and this time, Netflix is going straight to the source of his descent into terror. If you’ve been searching for manhunt unabomber netflix, here’s everything confirmed about the new film retelling Ted Kaczynski‘s chilling story.

A Quick Clarification First

It’s worth noting upfront: this new Netflix project is officially titled simply “Unabomber,” not to be confused with the acclaimed 2017 miniseries Manhunt: Unabomber, which also streams on Netflix and starred Sam Worthington and Paul Bettany. The new 2026 film revisits the same infamous case but tells a different chapter of the story — Kaczynski’s transformation years before the bombings began.

What Is the New Unabomber Film About?

The film follows Ted Kaczynski’s (played by Jacob Tremblay) transformation from a 16-year-old Harvard prodigy into the infamous Unabomber. It centers on the controversial psychological experiments he was subjected to by Professor Henry Murray (Russell Crowe) at Harvard — trauma that resurfaces decades later when FBI agent Joanne Miller (Shailene Woodley) leads the manhunt that finally catches him.

Director Janus Metz has said he was drawn less to the manhunt itself — famously the FBI’s longest and most expensive operation — and more to Kaczynski’s largely unknown years as a young math student at Harvard, calling it a way to uncover “a very dark chapter in American history.”

Meet the Cast

Leading the film is Jacob Tremblay as the young Kaczynski, opposite Russell Crowe as his manipulative Harvard professor. Shailene Woodley plays the FBI agent tasked with tracking him down, while Annabelle Wallis plays Christiana Morgan, Murray’s academic partner. The supporting cast includes Alexander Ludwig, Steven Ogg, and Marc Menchaca.

Why This Story Still Resonates?

Ted Kaczynski’s case remains one of the most studied in American criminal history — a mathematics prodigy turned domestic terrorist whose manifesto continues to be dissected decades later. By focusing on his Harvard years rather than just the bombings, this new film offers a psychological origin story rarely explored in earlier retellings, including the original Manhunt: Unabomber series.
