The script couldn’t be more Brazilian — dramatic, emotional, and painfully uncertain. Neymar Jr’s return to the FIFA World Cup 2026 stage, the comeback story that football had been building up for months, will have to wait at least one more game. The 34-year-old has been officially ruled out of Brazil’s second group stage fixture against Haiti in Philadelphia.
A Second Absence That Hurts More Than the First
Neymar’s selection in the 26-man FIFA World Cup squad was a huge surprise for the fans — the football world was elated upon learning they would get to witness the Brazilian attacker one last time on the grandest stage of football.
Instead, the wait continues. The CBF has announced that Neymar will not travel to Philadelphia to join the Brazilian national team delegation for their second match at the FIFA World Cup against Haiti. The former Barcelona and PSG star will stay in New Jersey to optimise the final phase of his recovery process.
Without the 34-year-old, the Seleção played a 1-1 draw against last edition’s semi-finalists Morocco — a result that exposed a clear lack of creativity in midfield, which is precisely the one thing Neymar can fix.

What Happens Next
It remains to be seen when the 34-year-old finally makes his return at the FIFA World Cup — with Brazil’s third group game now representing the most realistic opportunity for the Seleção’s talisman to make his long-awaited comeback appearance.
Brazil cannot afford another draw. And the footballing world — regardless of allegiance — cannot afford to miss Neymar at his last World Cup.
