When the director behind some of Korea’s most haunting films teams up with two of its finest actors for a mystery set near one of the world’s most tense borders — you pay attention. HOPE just locked in its theatrical premiere date, and this one is shaping up to be the Korean film event of the summer.

What Is “HOPE” About?

Set in the quiet coastal village of Hopo Port, located near Korea’s Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), the film follows Bum Seok (Hwang Jung Min), the no-nonsense chief of the local police substation. When area youths report spotting a tiger in the vicinity, the entire village is plunged into a state of emergency — including a sharp young hunter named Sung Ki (Zo In Sung), who finds himself at the centre of an unimaginable unfolding reality.

It sounds deceptively simple. But this is Na Hong Jin’s film — the masterful director behind The Chaser, The Yellow Sea, and The Wailing. Nothing stays simple for long.

Already a Global Sensation Before Its Release

HOPE isn’t arriving quietly. The film was selected for the main competition section of the 79th Cannes Film Festival — one of the most prestigious slots in world cinema — where it was praised for its unpredictable rhythm and relentless pacing. Perhaps more remarkably, it was pre-sold to over 200 countries and regions worldwide before even hitting Korean theatres, a staggering vote of global confidence.

This is the kind of film that reminds the world why Korean cinema has been impossible to ignore since Parasite changed everything.

Why This Film Could Be Unmissable

Na Hong Jin directing Hwang Jung Min and Zo In Sung together is a combination that needs very little selling. Hwang Jung Min is one of Korea’s most decorated actors, and Zo In Sung brings a magnetic intensity to every project he touches. Set against the eerie backdrop of a DMZ-adjacent village with a tiger on the loose — and whatever truth lies beneath that — HOPE promises the kind of slow-burn, genre-defying dread that Na Hong Jin has perfected.
