AI-Generated Screenplays and the Future of Festival Cinema

AI-generated screenplays for a hypothetical “Sundance 2” event are still in the realm of speculation. There are no confirmed programming announcements for this kind of festival in the current industry records. The discussion around artificial intelligence in creative writing has certainly ramped up since the WGA struck its historic deal with studios in October 2023. However, a prominent festival focused on machine-written scripts hasn’t shown any solid evidence yet.

As of June 3, 2026, we don’t have any details confirming a director, lead cast, or distribution platform for an AI-driven project at such a festival.

The original Sundance Film Festival, which Robert Redford and the Utah/US Film Festival organisation founded in 1985, still stands as the gold standard for independent cinema. Claims about a “Sundance 2” event seem to stray far from the established festival circuit, which wrapped up its 2025 edition on February 2.

It’s important to differentiate between the genuine advancement of AI tools in film production and the buzz that often surrounds new technologies. From what we’ve seen, while studios are looking into generative models for script assistance, no major platform has given the green light to a fully AI-written feature that has made it to widespread theaters.

AI-Generated Screenplays: The Reality of AI in Script Development

The WGA’s October 2023 agreement clearly outlines how studios can use AI, ensuring writers keep their credit and compensation protections. This structure is a key reason we haven’t seen an influx of machine-authored scripts taking over the festival circuit.

If an AI were to draft a screenplay, union rules currently require that human writers still get credited for their input on the final product.

There’s a range of opinions on this topic. Some tech enthusiasts believe AI could democratise filmmaking by making it easier for aspiring creators to jump in. Yet, we still think that the human touch is what really sets high-quality storytelling apart.

The subtleties of character development and the pacing of emotional arcs are still areas where human intuition shines beyond what current generative models can achieve.

Navigating the Hype vs. Industry Standards

Here’s the thing: what’s actually happening is a quiet integration of AI into pre-production processes, rather than completely replacing the creative journey. Studios are using these tools to help with storyboards, budget forecasting, and other administrative tasks. However, the core narrative still lies firmly with professionals.

The big question is: how will audiences respond to the transparency of AI’s involvement once it becomes commonplace?

The industry is currently treading carefully, experimenting with AI. We believe that the emphasis will stay on original human vision for the time being, especially at festivals known for their authentic storytelling. While rumors about AI-focused showcases might make headlines, they currently lack the support from any major production company or festival organization, as noted by OpenAI Blog.

The future of cinema will likely adopt a hybrid model, where AI serves as a smart assistant rather than the main author. We’re excited to see how creators will mix these new tools while keeping the essential human connection that films demand.

Whether specific festivals will dedicate entire slates to AI is still up in the air. However, the broader trend indicates that human-led storytelling will keep shaping the market.

Will AI-generated screenplays be featured at the Sundance Film Festival in 2026?

As of now, reports from the Sundance Institute show that there’s no official category for AI-generated screenplays for the 2026 festival. They continue to focus on works created by human authors.

How does the Sundance Film Festival verify the authorship of submitted screenplays?

The Sundance Film Festival requires all applicants to sign an affidavit confirming their screenplay is an original work by human writers. The selection committee employs thorough review processes to ensure compliance with these authorship standards.
