The Franchise That Simply Won’t Stop Winning

The Roundup series is Korea’s longest-running action franchise centred on detective Ma Seok Do (Ma Dong Seok) as he takes down various criminal organisations. Beginning with The Outlaws in 2017, the franchise continued with The Roundup, The Roundup: No Way Out, and The Roundup: Punishment.

What makes the series truly remarkable is its consistency at the box office. The franchise set records as the first in Korean film history to have three instalments surpass 10 million moviegoers, reaching a cumulative 40 million moviegoers across the series. In a country of 51 million people, that figure is genuinely staggering.

Action films built around a single iconic character tend to either peak early or sustain through sheer charisma and formula — The Roundup has managed the rare feat of growing its audience with each entry, proving that Ma Seok Do punching criminals is a formula Korean audiences will never tire of.

Why Seo Hyun Woo Is a Perfect Addition?

Seo Hyun Woo has steadily built a strong filmography through projects including Veteran, A Taxi Driver, My Mister, Flower of Evil, Uncle Samsik, A Shop for Killers, and The Fiery Priest 2. This year, he also impressed viewers through the ENA dramas Honour and Climax.

That’s a resume of almost exclusively acclaimed, high-performing projects — the kind of actor who elevates every scene he’s in. His role in The Roundup 5 hasn’t been detailed yet, but whether he plays a scene-stealing villain or a memorable supporting character, his addition significantly raises the film’s already high ceiling.

Filming is set for the second half of 2026, with Kim Jae Yeong confirmed in the villain role alongside franchise cornerstone Ma Dong Seok.
