What’s the Drama Actually About?

The Legend of Kitchen Soldier is a military fantasy-comedy drama that follows army cook Kang Sung Jae — played by Park Ji Hoon. When a mysterious quest window pops up in front of him one day, Private Kang Sung Jae begins an unexpected journey that leads him down the path toward becoming a legendary cook.

Think of it as a web novel adaptation that blends the structured world of military life with RPG-style game mechanics — a genre mashup that K-drama fans have increasingly embraced. The result sounds like pure, joyful entertainment.

Why Park Ji Hoon Said Yes — In His Own Words

The casting couldn’t feel more fitting. Park Ji Hoon, well-known as a “military enthusiast,” said he had always wanted to wear a military uniform in a project and wanted to take on a new challenge. He found it particularly interesting that Kang Sung Jae is someone who builds his own standing while adapting to an unfamiliar environment, and that the process of him earning trust within the unit through his skills was very appealing. soompi

That personal connection to the subject matter — a self-confessed military fan playing a soldier — means he isn’t just acting the part. He’s genuinely living something he’s always been drawn to.

The Dedication: Real Cooking Lessons, Real Results

Here’s where it gets impressive. Park Ji Hoon took cooking lessons before filming to convincingly portray the unique profession of a kitchen soldier. As he learned to cook one dish after another, his knife skills gradually improved.

That’s not background prep — that’s the kind of commitment that shows up on screen.

The Unique Acting Challenge: Reacting to the “Guardian”

The drama’s fantasy element adds an unusual performance layer. Park Ji Hoon explained that he wanted to express a character who gradually grows by utilizing the “Guardian” — a virtual quest-giver that appears in the drama — paying extra attention to his facial expressions, such as shifting his gaze as if the character were actually standing right in front of him.

Acting against an invisible entity convincingly is genuinely difficult, and the fact that he thought deeply about how to make those moments feel real speaks volumes about his approach to the role.

As for what viewers should look out for, Park Ji Hoon shared his hope that audiences will watch how Kang Sung Jae builds relationships with various characters and grows throughout the story, as well as the chemistry he creates along the way. soompi
