Two RB Leipzig centre-backs are set to don red shirts next season, since Liverpool are close to finalising the transfer of Ibrahima Konate. Dayot Upamecano has already been announced as a Bayern Munich player from the start of the 21/22 season.
Konate has been a target for the Merseysiders and their scouts for a while now, with the interest primarily arising due to the centre-back injury crisis that has plagued Liverpool this season. The France U21 international is on the verge of coming to the Premier League, with final talks underway.
Liverpool will be paying the Frenchman’s release clause, which is valued at €35 million in the next few days to complete the signing. Leipzig were adamant to not let Konate go for anything less than his release clause, and that is exactly what they will be getting for their man.
All personal terms have been agreed between Konate and Liverpool, and the player will sign a five year contract that will see him be a Liverpool player till 2026.
Virgil Van Dijk is still out injured alongside Joe Gomez, and Joel Matip. Ozan Kabak and either Fabinho or Nat Phillips have played due to the absence of the two first team defenders. While the presence of Konate could be an overload on the number of quality centre-backs at the club, Ozan Kabak could still return to Schalke since he is on loan and Joel Matip could be sold due to his injury prone nature.
