When your fictional crushes show up as your real teachers, school life gets gloriously, catastrophically complicated. Kim Hyang Gi’s new drama is already peak chaos.

If you’ve ever written a story about someone you know and prayed they’d never find out — imagine that person becoming your teacher. That’s essentially the nightmare-meets-fantasy scenario at the heart of Coupang Play’s brand new K-drama, Absolute Value of Romance, and the first look stills suggest it’s going to be an absolute ride.

Absolute Value of Romance Drama Overview

What’s the Story?

Absolute Value of Romance tells the story of high school student Yeo Eui Ju (Kim Hyang Gi), who secretly writes a BL novel featuring her handsome teachers as the main characters. However, when she winds up running into these teachers in real life at unexpected moments, her once-peaceful school life takes a turbulent turn.

It’s a premise built entirely on secondhand embarrassment and delight — the kind of comedy that makes you cover your eyes while desperately peeking through your fingers.

First Look — Chaos Already Incoming

The newly released stills depict Yeo Eui Ju grasping tightly to her phone with her gaze wavering as the prickly and cold match teacher Ga Wu Su (Cha Hak Yeon) appears in front of her, hinting at a misunderstanding that will take place. As the handsome men who moved in next door become Yeo Eui Ju’s teachers, stills of Gi Jeon (Sohn Jeong Hyuck) and Da Ju (Kim Jae Hyun) teaching at her school further raise anticipation for her chaotic school life.

From Yeo Eui Ju discovering a fainted Wu Su on the ground to being found herself in a pile of trash, and Wu Su appearing with his glasses all taped up, the stills highlight a string of unpredictable, laugh-out-loud moments to come. Free Press Journal

The energy is wonderfully unhinged from the very first images — this is exactly the kind of lighthearted, feel-good comedy that K-drama fans need between heavier shows. Learn more about the BL fiction genre and its growing cultural footprint in East Asian popular media on Wikipedia.

Why This Drama Deserves Your Attention?

Kim Hyang Gi has been one of Korean drama’s most quietly consistent young actresses — warm, expressive, and completely natural on screen. Paired with Cha Hak Yeon (VIXX’s N) who has been steadily building his acting career, the chemistry between the prickly teacher and the mortified student-author is already promising in still photos alone.
