The Dhurandhar Role That Multiple Stars Turned Down — And Why Akshaye Khanna Said Yes in One Night

Bollywood’s best-kept casting secrets don’t stay secret forever. And this one is genuinely jaw-dropping. The iconic role of Rehman Dakait in Dhurandhar — which became one of the most celebrated performances of Akshaye Khanna’s career — was reportedly turned down by two Bollywood stars and a South Indian actor before it ever reached him. The reason? They didn’t want to play second fiddle to Ranveer Singh.

The Dhurandhar Casting Story — Key Facts

What Casting Director Mukesh Chhabra Revealed

Speaking to Bollywood Hungama, casting director Mukesh Chhabra disclosed that 2–3 actors declined the part before Akshaye Khanna came on board. He said without naming anyone that one South Indian actor and two Bollywood actors passed on the role, citing the logic that the film was ultimately Ranveer Singh’s vehicle. Director Aditya Dhar, he noted, moved past the rejections quickly without dwelling on them.

What happened next is the stuff of Bollywood legend. Mukesh approached Akshaye Khanna, who agreed to hear the narration. He sat with the team for four full hours, quietly listening, smoking cigarettes throughout. When the session ended, he reportedly said it was very good and left. The very next morning, he texted Chhabra to confirm he was doing the film. No lengthy negotiations. No ego. Just craft.

After Khanna came on board, R. Madhavan was the next to join, followed by Sanjay Dutt and Arjun Rampal — both of whom had initial reservations but quickly came around. The ensemble snowballed from there into one of Bollywood’s most talked-about casts in years. For more behind-the-scenes Bollywood casting stories and film news, visit TechnoSports.

Dhurandhar’s Irony — And What Comes Next

The actors who rejected the role citing Ranveer’s dominance missed out on what became widely regarded as a career-defining performance. Akshaye Khanna’s portrayal of Rehman Dakait was praised across the board as a scene-stealing act, earning him renewed adulation from audiences. While his role in Dhurandhar: The Revenge was limited to a flashback, fans were clearly disappointed he wasn’t more prominent. His next film is Ikka.
