What Happened to The Little Prince on Netflix?

The Little Prince was one of the first major pickups for Netflix in the animated feature film arena. The movie was originally due to get a full theatrical release by Paramount Pictures but due to several reasons, that was eventually scrapped and Netflix acquired the rights in the US and internationally.

Added back in August 2016, the movie went on to stream for just over 4 years on Netflix US before first departing in November 2020. A year later, it was readded again on November 6, 2020 before being removed again in May 2021.

The confusion for many viewers stems from the fact that the film still carries Netflix Original branding in its trailer — despite no longer being available. As with a number of Netflix Originals, The Little Prince is not owned by Netflix. Although it exclusively released the movie, it doesn’t do so indefinitely. Paramount Pictures is still the ultimate owner of the movie and therefore Netflix simply lost the license despite it carrying Netflix Original branding.

This is a classic example of how “Netflix Original” doesn’t always mean Netflix owns the content forever — it simply means Netflix funded or exclusively distributed it for a specific licensing period. For those in the United States right now, you can stream the movie via Prime Video, although it’s suspected the movie will eventually permanently reside on Paramount+ in the near future.

Some regions still have access to the movie on Netflix, including the United Kingdom, India, Mexico, the Netherlands, and others.

So if you’re in the UK or India, open your Netflix app — The Little Prince may still be waiting for you. If you’re in the US, Prime Video is your best bet right now.

A follow-up Canadian documentary, Invisible Essence: The Little Prince, directed by Charles Officer, also departed Netflix in July 2021 after arriving on Netflix US in January 2019.
