My Brother the Minotaur : Overview

What’s the Story?

My Brother the Minotaur is a thrilling blend of folklore, mystery, and adventure centered on a young minotaur — half boy, half bull — found and raised in the human world. With the help of his fiercely loyal human brother, he recruits a bold group of friends to uncover the mystery of his minotaur past and fulfill his destiny, all while battling dark forces determined to see him fail.

At its emotional core, it’s a story about identity, belonging, and the bonds that make us who we are — themes that resonate deeply no matter your age. Creator Donal Mangan first conceived the idea while studying animation, imagining a minotaur boy hiding his horns under a hood — consumed by raw emotions, but capable of real kindness when surrounded by the right people.

Why 2D Animation Was the Perfect Choice?

This is where My Brother the Minotaur truly stands apart. In an era dominated by CGI and hyper-realistic visuals, the team made a bold, deliberate choice to go hand-crafted 2D — and it pays off beautifully.

As Nora Twomey of Cartoon Saloon explained, the specific look of the show allows the audience to lean into the screen rather than be overwhelmed by it — there’s an element of sophistication but also simplification in the design, meaning it’s never going to be “too much” for younger viewers. Director Maurice Joyce approached the series with the intention and ambition of a feature film — in scope, storytelling, and visual craft — using 2D as the medium to create a rich, unique visual language with bold choices that support the narrative. Animation World Network

Star-Studded Voice Cast

That is a genuinely stacked cast for a children’s animated series — a clear signal that Apple TV+ is treating this as a premium production all the way.

The Creative Powerhouse Behind It

The series comes from Academy Award-nominated Cartoon Saloon and award-winning children’s media company Dog Ears, produced with support from Northern Ireland Screen and the Irish Film Board. This is a passion project over a decade in the making — and every frame shows it. Apple
