What Is the Suspect X Movie About?

Set in the atmospheric Himalayan hill town of Kalimpong, the film follows a single mother suspected of a serious crime who is aided by her timid neighbour — a math teacher — who harbours a deeper connection with the sharp Mumbai cop who arrives to investigate the case.

Director Sujoy Ghosh described the film as containing “a love story, a criminal investigation, a budding attraction, mastermind plotting and the will to do anything for love.” The result is a film that operates on multiple emotional layers simultaneously — and keeps you second-guessing every character right until the final frame.

The Story Behind the Film

Bringing Suspect X to Hindi cinema was a decade-long dream for writer-director Sujoy Ghosh. The project was originally announced in 2015 and was intended to star Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Saif Ali Khan — but that version never came together. Years later, Kareena Kapoor Khan stepped into the lead role, marking her very first project for a streaming service.

That’s a massive deal. Kareena is one of Bollywood’s most iconic stars — celebrated for roles in Jab We Met, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, and Talaash — and her OTT debut landing on Netflix was a genuine coup for the platform.

Cast That Delivers

Kareena Kapoor Khan is joined by Jaideep Ahlawat (Bard of Blood) and Netflix veteran Vijay Varma, who has previously starred in Darlings, She, Lust Stories 2, and Ghost Stories for the streamer. Three powerhouse performers, three distinctly different characters — the chemistry and tension between them is electric.

The original source material — The Devotion of Suspect X by Japanese author Keigo Higashino — has been adapted multiple times across Korean, Chinese, and Japanese cinema, making Sujoy Ghosh’s Hindi interpretation a genuinely fascinating cultural addition to that legacy.
