7 Years After “Endgame,” Marvel’s Biggest Mistake Finally Gets a Shot at Redemption in “Avengers: Doomsday”

Seven years ago, “Avengers: Endgame” closed one of the greatest cinematic sagas ever built. What followed, though, hasn’t matched that high — and fans have spent the Multiverse Saga wondering exactly what went wrong. Now, “Avengers: Doomsday” might finally be Marvel’s chance to fix it.

The mistake that stalled the MCU

When “Endgame” wrapped in 2019, the MCU stood at its peak. But instead of building a new core team the way it had before, Marvel Studios spent Phase 4 telling largely self-contained stories — think “Moon Knight” and “Hawkeye” — without tying them together into a unified direction. The result: a franchise that felt disjointed, without a clear sense of who its next Avengers would even be.

How the Infinity Saga did it right?

Compare that to the Infinity Saga’s formula. Phases 1 and 2 spent years fleshing out the core Avengers lineup — Thor, Bruce Banner, Natasha Romanoff, Clint Barton, Steve Rogers, Tony Stark — before Phase 3 broke them apart, creating real tension. When they reunited to fight Thanos, their history made the eventual “Endgame” payoff land. The Multiverse Saga never built that same connective tissue: the Fantastic Four have no ties to the Thunderbolts, and Wakanda barely connects to anyone else in the current roster.

Avengers: Doomsday: Overview

Why “Doomsday” is the fix

“Doomsday” has a real opportunity to correct course by pulling groups like the Fantastic Four and the Thunderbolts together to fight a common threat: Doom. If that team-up sticks, it gives Marvel a foundation of shared history heading into “Avengers: Secret Wars,” just one year later — mirroring the arc from “Infinity War” to “Endgame,” where an initial defeat fuels a stronger, more unified comeback.

This kind of ensemble-building strategy isn’t new to superhero cinema; it echoes how long-running comic universes like Marvel’s have always relied on team dynamics and shared continuity to keep stakes meaningful, a tradition rooted deep in Marvel Comics history. Whether Marvel Studios can translate that formula back onto the screen after years of fragmented storytelling remains the real test.

What’s riding on it

If “Doomsday” successfully assembles a tight, connected roster, “Secret Wars” could recapture some of the “Endgame” magic. If not, Marvel risks compounding the very problem it’s trying to solve — leaving its next Avengers era just as scattered as the last one.
