25 Years After Lagaan, Aamir Khan & Farhan Akhtar May Reunite for India’s Most Awaited Cricket Film

Bollywood just dropped a casting update that has cricket and cinema fans buzzing in equal measure. Farhan Akhtar is reportedly in talks to join Aamir Khan in Ashutosh Gowariker’s upcoming sports drama — a partition-era biopic on legendary cricketer Lala Amarnath, India’s first Test captain.

This is the reunion nobody saw coming, but everyone secretly wanted.

Aamir Khan & Farhan Akhtar Film Overview

What We Know So Far

Aamir Khan and Ashutosh Gowariker are reuniting exactly 25 years after Lagaan — one of Indian cinema’s most iconic films. The new project centres on Lala Amarnath, who captained India in their first-ever Test series win against Pakistan in 1952. He passed away in August 2000 at the age of 88, leaving behind a cricket legacy that’s never truly been captured on screen.

According to sources, Farhan Akhtar is being considered for the role of Lala Amarnath’s closest friend — a character from undivided India who eventually crosses over to Pakistan following the Partition. It’s the kind of emotionally loaded role that could be Farhan’s finest in years. The friendship between the two characters is being described as the emotional spine of the entire film.

This isn’t just a cricket biopic. It’s a story of loyalty, borders, and bonds that survive history.

What Else Is on Aamir’s Plate?

Beyond this project, Aamir Khan is also attached to 4 Idiots (the long-awaited 3 Idiots sequel directed by Rajkumar Hirani) and director Rahul Mody’s next start-up drama. It’s shaping up to be the most loaded phase of Aamir’s career in over a decade.
