Spanish Super Cup 2023: Real Madrid advance to Supercopa de Espana finals beating Valencia 4-3 on penalties

Real Madrid advanced to the finals of the 2022 Supercopa de Espana with a 4-3 win on penalties against Valencia in the semi-final. Outfield play ended 1-1 between the two teams, and they had to be separated from spot kicks.

In the end, Thibaut Courtois was able to deny Valencia captain Jose Gaya to seal the win for his side. Madrid will now defend their Supercopa title on Sunday against whoever wins the other semi-final.

Real Madrid through to 2022 Supercopa de Espana finals

Karim Benzema opened the scoring for Los Blancos from the spot, continuing their perfect penalty record for almost 40 years in the tournament. The Frenchman has also become the first to score in five consecutive Supercopa games since Messi in 2012.

Samuel Lino pulled his side level only a minute into the second half. The striker was at the end of a cross from Lato, and smashed the ball past Thibaut Courtois to equalise.

Both teams had to lose players to injury, and extra time was probably the last thing that the managers wanted. But since the two could not be separated, the game had to go to the shootout. And Real Madrid continued their dominance in Supercopa shootouts by eliminating Valencia.

Los Blancos will face either Barcelona or Real Betis in the finals depending on who wins the other semi-final.
