AMD Ryzen 7045 Dragon Range and Ryzen 7040 Phoenix Mobility CPUs are officially launched

AMD will offer its latest Ryzen 7045 Dragon Range & Ryzen 7040 Phoenix Mobility CPUs with Zen 4 & RDNA 3 cores for laptops in 2023. AMD launched its Ryzen 7000 Mobility portfolio last year with the Mendocino CPUs, and they are now unveiling two more families, the Ryzen 7045 ‘Dragon Range’ and Ryzen 7040 ‘Phoenix’ CPUs.

The AMD Dragon Range CPUs will be focused at the high-performance category, with more cores, threads, and cache than AMD has previously given, whilst the Phoenix Point CPUs will be geared at the thin and light laptop segment. TDP ratings for Dragon Range CPUs will be about 55W-75W+, while Phoenix Point CPUs will be around 35-45W. The base configuration has a TDP of 55W, and we can expect the chip to be adjustable up to 75W for laptop designs with high-end cooling and larger form factors.

AMD has added four new SKUs to its Dragon Range range, including the Ryzen 9 7945HX, which has 16 cores and 32 threads, the Ryzen 9 7845HX, which has 12 cores and 24 threads, the Ryzen 7 7745HX, which has 8 cores and 16 threads, and the Ryzen 5 7645HX, which has 6 cores and 12 threads.

When compared to the AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX, the new flagship Ryzen 9 7945HX CPU provides up to an 18% boost in single-threaded performance, a 78% increase in multi-threaded performance, and a 62% improvement in gaming performance.

AMD has confirmed its Phoenix Point APU portfolio, which will include Zen 4 and RDNA 3 cores. The new Phoenix APUs will support LPDDR5 and PCIe 5 and will be available in 35W to 45W SKUs. AMD has also stated that the laptop components may feature memory technologies other than LPDDR5 and DDR5. The CPUs will be equipped with the most recent AMD XDNA AI engines.

AMD is releasing three SKUs, the flagship being the Ryzen 9 7940HS. This chip has 8 cores, 16 threads, a base speed of 4.0 GHz, a boost clock of 5.2 GHz, a total cache of 40 MB, and an integrated RDNA 3 GPU with 12 Compute Units that operate at up to 3000 MHz. This is followed by the 7840HS, which has a similar core design but lower clock speeds of 3.8 GHz base and 5.1 GHz boost clocks.
