AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D 3D V-Cache Chip Spotted Running at 4.8 GHz Breaking the No-Overclocking rule

The world’s first 3D V-Cache chip, AMD’s Ryzen 7 5800X3D, will be available in stores next week, and it appears that overclockers have already broken its OC-Lock. The AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D, based on the 7nm Zen 3 core architecture, will be the first and only chip with 3D V-Cache.

Thanks to its additional 64 MB 3D Stacked SRAM design, the CPU will have 8 cores, 16 threads, and 100 MB of total cache. With a TDP of 105W, clock speeds will be maintained at 3.4 GHz base and 4.5 GHz boost.

The CPU will have the same MSRP as the 5800X at $449 US, but the 5800X3D is more expensive than the Intel Core i7-12700K, which has more cores and threads but less cache. Performance comparisons between the two processors will be interesting.

AMD claims that Overclocking on the Ryzen 7 5800X3D CPU is hard locked to prevent physical harm to the 3D V-Cache

The voltage curve is the reason for the lock in the first place. While AMD’s Zen 3 chips can overclock to 1.5-1.6V, the 3D V-Cache stack that sits on top of the Zen 3 cores can only do 1.35V out of the box and is already at its limit. Users who attempt to overvolt the chip beyond that voltage curve risk damaging it, which is why overclocking is not recommended for the CPU. AMD has only stated that the CPU will support memory and FLCK overclocking.

Pieter of SKATTERBENCHER now appears to have proven AMD wrong by circumventing the overclock lock. The overclocker posted a screenshot of CPU-z, which shows the Ryzen 7 5800X3D working at 4.82 GHz, well above its 4.5 GHz top boost clock. With a 1.306V voltage, a 45.5 multiplier, and a BCLK of 105.99 MHz, the chip was running on the ASUS ROG Crosshair VIII Extreme motherboard. To make it work, the overclocker used ASUS’ Voltage Suspension technology, and he’ll be releasing a video soon outlining the entire procedure.

This demonstrates that the 3D V-Cache chip can be overclocked and that users can gain additional performance, albeit we don’t know what effect the overclock has on the cache itself or what temperatures/power it produces at such speeds.
