Qualcomm’s choice of Samsung over TSMC is costing its market share

Qualcomm has been using Samsung’s silicon since 2020 and their problems have cost MediaTek to rise out of nowhere has been relying mostly on its fellow Taiwanese world leader TSMC for years.

We know Apple is one of the biggest customers of TSMC and there is no doubt that their A-series chipsets have completely destroyed the smartphone SoC market. However, Qualcomm switching to Samsung for cheaper pricing might have affected its entire SoC market and reputation to lead the race for Android smartphones.

MediaTek’s Dimensity chips have taken the market by storm and are increasingly opted by fans who need good smartphones which has both the best performance along with efficiency. Take for example the newly launched Dimensity 8100 is giving a performance close to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 with almost 40% lesser power consumption.

Also, MediaTek’s flagship Dimensity 9000 has dethroned Qualcomm and is now leading the performance race while showing guts to give Apple’s A15 Bionic some competition. On the other hand, the reputed US chipmaker is facing a lot of criticisms and thermal issues by media, consumers and obviously smartphone OEMs as well.

Qualcomm has recently lost its biggest market i.e. the US to MediaTek and this ensures the Taiwanese company’s lead all over the world in a short span of time just because of their better products. While solely you cannot say using Samsung’s 5nm process might be the only reason for Qualcomm’s failure, however, the heating issues and inefficiency is mostly because of the process node Qualcomm is using.

This is the reason why recent Android flagships with the latest Qualcomm chips have faced such issues throughout last year and continue in 2022. TSMC is the leader and Samsung though could match it but not on the quality of the Taiwanese semiconductor giant, so, Qualcomm has understood this and is trying to rectify this mistake.

As per the reliable tipster @UniverseIce, the Qualcomm Snapdragon SoCs coming in the second half of 2022 will be using TSMC’s node and it is being said the massive draws could be better. So, if you are someone who was waiting to buy a new-age flagship better get MediaTek powered ones or wait for those TSMC based Snapdragon chips to launch later.
