The whole world has been outraged by the brutal death of George Floyd. He was killed by a police officer who kneeled down on the back of his neck. The #BlackLivesMatter movement has once again come to the forefront to protest against the racism that they face in their everyday lives.
Indian Premier League, the biggest franchise T20 league has also been accused of racism activities. Former Sunrisers Hyderabad player, Darren Sammy has accused his teammates of calling him names due to his skin colour.
IPL and Sunrisers had previously denied Sammy’s claims but now the proof of racism against him is on social media.
Ishant Sharma had posted a picture with Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Darren Sammy and Dale Steyn on Instagram. The caption was “Me, bhuvi, kaluu and gun sunrisers”. The caption of this picture has justified Sammy’s claim of racism in IPL.
Darren Sammy has now posted a video on Instagram on Monday. He has called out everyone who used the ‘degrading’ word.

So recently I discovered a word that I was being called was not what it actually meant I need some answers. So before I start calling out names I need these individuals to reach out and please tell me there’s another meaning to that word and when I was being called it,it was all in love. #blackandproud #blackandconfident #clarasboy #saynotoracism #stopracism #cricketer #stlucia

Sammy further said: “I will be messaging those people who called me by that name, you guys know who you are. I must admit at that time when I was being called that, I didn’t know what it meant, I thought the word meant strong stallion or whatever it is, and I saw no problems because I was ignorant about what it meant.”
“But every time I and Thisara Perera was called with that word, there was laughter at that moment. Me being a team man, I thought teammates are happy, so it must be something funny.”
These incidents happened in 2013 when Sammy and Pereira were playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad. But IPL franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad, Board of Cricket Control of India (BCCI) and some of his teammates have denied all these allegations.
BCCI treasurer Arun Dhummal said: “Someone should report for us to act. Also, BCCI has zero-tolerance policy against any racial slurs. We as an organization always stand for equality for everyone.”
Ishant Sharma’s picture with the caption ‘Kaalu’ will go a long way in proving Sammy’s claim of racism in IPL. It’s sad to hear that racism hasn’t even spared IPL. Racism should be banned and dealt with strongly. A person should not be belittled because of his skin colour.
