15-Year-Old Sooryavanshi Rewrites Duleep Trophy History

Some records stand for decades because no one dares to bat like a teenager with nothing to lose. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi just proved otherwise — smashing a 57-year-old Duleep Trophy record that had survived since 1969.

What Happened

Playing for East Zone against Central Zone in the semi-final at the BCCI Centre of Excellence Ground 1 in Bengaluru, the 15-year-old opener raced to his fifty off just 42 balls, bringing it up with a six off spinner Saransh Jain. At 15 years and 157 days, he became the youngest player ever to score a Duleep Trophy half-century, erasing the record held by Laxman Singh (16 years, 23 days) since 1969.

He didn’t stop there — Sooryavanshi went on to smash 92 off 81 balls, laced with seven fours and seven sixes, before falling just eight runs short of a century that would have made him the youngest Duleep Trophy centurion ever, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s long-standing mark.

Why It Matters

This isn’t Sooryavanshi’s first brush with history. From becoming the youngest IPL debutant at 13 to the youngest T20 centurion at 14, his career has been one record chase after another. This latest knock shows he can translate his explosive T20 game into the longer, more patient format of first-class cricket — a crucial test for any young batter with international ambitions.

A Career Still Just Getting Started

Even falling short of the century, Sooryavanshi’s 92 confirmed what scouts have said for years: his game translates across formats.
