15-Year-Old Sooryavanshi Just Rewrote the Record Books — Again

Four. Four. Four. Six. Six. Dot. Six. Four. Four. Six. Six. That’s not a highlights reel — that’s literally the first 11 balls Vaibhav Sooryavanshi faced in the Tri-Series final against Sri Lanka A. By the time the dust settled, the 15-year-old had the fastest fifty in List A cricket history, and he wasn’t even close to finished.

The Numbers That Broke the Internet

Sooryavanshi’s effort eclipses Sri Lankan veteran Kaushalya Weeraratne’s two-decade-old global record by a single delivery, and comfortably erases Sarfaraz Khan’s mark as the fastest List A fifty by an Indian. He fell agonizingly short of an even bigger prize — the fastest List A century, a record still held by Australia’s Jake Fraser-McGurk at 29 balls — caught at mid-off off his own captain-opponent Sahan Arachchige while going for one shot too many.

How It Unfolded

Opening alongside Priyansh Arya in the final at Rangiri Dambulla, Sooryavanshi treated the new ball like throwdowns in the nets. His first five deliveries alone produced three fours and two sixes off Sri Lankan pacer Mohamed Shiraz, and India A had crossed 100 runs inside the powerplay before Sri Lanka A’s bowlers had any answers. The opening stand with Arya added 132 runs in just 8.5 overs, setting up a platform that carried India A to a commanding 377/9 in their 50 overs.

A Statement Innings, On and Off the Field

The timing mattered as much as the numbers. Sooryavanshi had walked into the final under scrutiny following a heated shoving incident with Sri Lanka A’s Vishen Halambage after a tied Super Over loss earlier in the series — a moment that drew criticism of his temperament. This response was about as emphatic as it gets.

It also continues an extraordinary run that’s already reshaped how Indian cricket talks about teenage talent. Sooryavanshi enters this final fresh off an IPL 2026 season where he swept the Orange Cap, MVP, and three other awards for Rajasthan Royals with 776 runs at a strike rate of 237, and a senior India call-up that broke a Sachin Tendulkar record held for 36 years. He’s also part of the storyline of Bihar’s growing list of cricketing exports, following in the footsteps of MS Dhoni and Ishan Kishan from the same state.

The Bottom Line

A 15-year-old just produced the fastest fifty in the format’s history on the biggest stage of a tri-series final, batting like it was a T10 contest against a full international attack. India A’s selectors, already managing one of the most talked-about prospects in world cricket, now have even less reason to slow him down. The only thing standing between Sooryavanshi and the actual fastest List A century was his own dismissal — and on this evidence, that record won’t stay safe for long.
