Mohun Bagan is a name that has a deep attachment with Indian football. The oldest existing association football club in India, and one of the oldest in Asia. Mariners has a very special moment of history to celebrate today, as does Indian football.

 It was on 29th July, 1911 Mohan Bagan beat British team East Yorkshire Regiment 2-1, to win the Indian Football Association Shield. It has been 108 years since the monumental event.

The win also marked the first time an Indian or Asian Club had defeated a foreign team.

The historic triumph was a matter of great privilege. It was the clarion call of a golden dream. 

 Mohun Bagan had defeated heavy weight team ms like St. Xavier’s at a margin of 3-0, defeated Rangers by 2-1, won over Rifle Brigade by 1-0 and had a tie with Middlesex Regiment 1-1. Later Mohun Bagan won by 3-0 to reach the final.

 At this stage all the Bengali youths were rejuvenated with undaunted spirits. The joy of their team playing the finals of IFA Sheild encouraged them towards the game.

The bengalis have a special place for football in their heart and the Mariners worship their team.

The Mariners hoisted flags of one of the ancient clubs because of the Mohun Bagan Day. In different parts of the country the Mohun Bagan supporters are seen to celebrate this day.

It was not any moment, rather it was an occassion that would change Bengal football forever. Thousands of people thronged from far away Patna, Purnia, Kishanganj, Assam & Dhaka to watch the match. The atmosphere was electric, and the crowd deafening.
