According to Famitsu, the Xbox Series console family sold 6,695 units between June 13 and June 19, surpassing the PS5‘s 3,035 sales. While Sony continues to outsell Xbox in Japan, this is the second time this generation that weekly sales have been significantly in Microsoft’s favor.

Xbox Series X/S Outselling PS5

Famitsu claimed last month that Microsoft sold 6,120 Xbox Series S devices during the week of May 9-15, with an additional 105 Xbox Series X consoles sold during the same period. The PS5 sold only 2,963 units, putting it far behind the competition.

It is said that Sony is currently experiencing PS5 shortages due to supply chain concerns. According to IGN Japan employees, it’s simply more difficult to find a PS5 in Japan, but Xbox systems, notably the Series S, are considerably easier to come by.

This is a significant achievement for Microsoft, which has always struggled in Japan. To put this in context, the Xbox Series X/S were lucky to sell 3,000 units combined last year, but with supply chain troubles hitting Sony’s PS5 sales stats, Xbox is benefiting from its withdrawal from the market.

About the Sales in Japan

However, this is likely to be a one-time gain for Microsoft. In comparison, the PS5 sold 12,440 units the week preceding this new milestone, while the Xbox Series consoles sold a total of 6,242 units. That’s not exactly an indication that Xbox is entirely changing things in the region.

It appears like Xbox is benefiting from Sony’s supply chain troubles, albeit only momentarily. The results do not indicate that Sony is losing its footing in the market, as lifetime sales of the PS5 in Japan show a pretty healthy uptake.

According to Famitsu, the PS5 has sold 1.69 million systems since its release, while the Xbox Series has sold only 232,000 units, a significant disparity. And don’t even think of comparing these to the Nintendo Switch, which has sold a whopping 24.7 million copies in total.
