Xavi Named Netherlands Coach on Four Year Deal Until 2030

Xavi Hernández — 46 years old, 767 Barcelona appearances as a player, 133 Spain caps, World Cup and two Euros winner, plus a 63.9% managerial win rate across 244 games — has officially agreed to become the new head coach of the Netherlands national team on a four-year contract until 2030.

The Official Appointment

On 12 August 2026 the KNVB announced that it had reached an agreement with Xavi to take charge of the Oranje. The former Barcelona midfielder and manager becomes the first foreign head coach of the Netherlands since 1978.

The deal runs for four years through to 2030. Patrick Kluivert will join the coaching staff as an assistant, bringing Dutch football knowledge and previous national-team experience to the setup.

Xavi becomes available after leaving Barcelona in 2024 and turns his attention to international management for the first time.

Xavi on the Role

“I consider it a tremendous honour to become the head coach of the Dutch national team,” Xavi said. The Spanish coach chose the Netherlands project for the international challenge after receiving offers from clubs worldwide.

Why the Change — Koeman’s Exit

Ronald Koeman stepped down as Netherlands head coach at the end of June 2026 following the team’s Round of 32 exit at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Dutch lost to Morocco on penalties, marking their earliest World Cup exit.

Koeman had been in his second spell in charge. The KNVB moved quickly to identify a successor, with Xavi emerging ahead of other candidates including Roberto Martínez, Peter Bosz, Arne Slot, Erik ten Hag and others.

The Netherlands sit 9th in the FIFA men’s world rankings as of July 2026.

Managerial Record — The Numbers

Xavi built an impressive coaching CV before taking the Oranje job.

At Al-Sadd (2019–2021) he oversaw 102 matches with 67 wins, 17 draws and 18 losses for a 65.7% win rate, collecting seven trophies including the Qatar Stars League.

At Barcelona (November 2021–May/June 2024) he managed approximately 142–143 games with around 89 wins (roughly 62.7% win rate). He delivered the 2022–23 La Liga title and the 2023 Supercopa de España.

Overall managerial record stands at 244 games, 156 wins, 41 draws and 47 losses for a 63.93% win percentage.

Playing Career Highlights — Why He Fits Dutch Football

Xavi is widely regarded as one of the greatest midfielders ever. A La Masia graduate, he made 767 official appearances for Barcelona (a club record at the time), scoring 85 goals, and won multiple La Liga titles and three Champions Leagues as part of the tiki-taka era alongside Iniesta and Busquets.

For Spain he earned 133 caps and scored 13 goals. He was central to the golden generation that won UEFA Euro 2008 (Player of the Tournament), the 2010 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2012. He also claimed the 1999 FIFA U-20 World Cup.

He later played for Al-Sadd (82 appearances, 20 goals) before retiring in 2019 and immediately moving into management.

His possession-based philosophy, emphasis on technical quality and positional play align closely with traditional Dutch Total Football principles — a natural fit for the Oranje.

Coaching Staff & Immediate Outlook

Patrick Kluivert’s arrival as assistant adds local expertise. The former Ajax, Barcelona and Netherlands striker previously served on the Dutch national-team staff and has coaching experience at club and youth levels.

Xavi inherits a talented squad featuring established stars and emerging talents. His first tasks will include preparing for upcoming Nations League or qualifying fixtures and building a style that maximises the technical quality in the Dutch pool.

The four-year deal through 2030 gives him a clear runway toward the next major tournaments, including the 2028 European Championship and the 2030 World Cup cycle.

The Bigger Picture

Appointing a 46-year-old Spanish coach with elite playing pedigree and a proven trophy-winning managerial record marks a bold new chapter for the Oranje. Xavi becomes only the latest high-profile foreign influence after decades of predominantly Dutch coaches, yet his footballing DNA — shaped by Cruyff, Guardiola and Rijkaard — resonates deeply with Dutch ideals.

With a 63.9% career win rate, nine managerial trophies already secured, and the backing of a four-year project, Xavi has the platform to restore the Netherlands to consistent contenders on the biggest stages.
