Women Premier League 2025 Kicks Off: Defending Champs RCB Face Gardner’s Giants in Thrilling Opener

Women Premier League 2025 Updates!

The Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 is set to begin with a bang as defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) take on the Gujarat Giants in what promises to be an electrifying season opener. The match, scheduled for February 14, 2025, at 7:30 PM IST, will be held at the Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara, marking the first time the city hosts a WPL game.

Women Premier League 2025: A New Venue, A New Chapter

The choice of Vadodara as the venue for the opening match signifies the WPL’s expansion beyond its previous host cities of Maharashtra, Delhi, and Bengaluru. This move not only brings the excitement of women’s cricket to a new audience but also provides the Gujarat Giants with a taste of home advantage for the first time in the tournament’s history

Star-Studded Lineups with a Twist

Both teams boast impressive rosters, but injuries and unavailability have added an intriguing element to their lineup decisions:

Gujarat Giants: The Home Favorites

Under the new leadership of Ashleigh Gardner, the Giants are looking to make a strong start. Their probable lineup includes:

1. Beth Mooney (wk)
2. Laura Wolvaardt
3. Harleen Deol
4. Deandra Dottin
5. Dayalan Hemalatha
6. Ashleigh Gardner (capt)
7. Simran Shaikh
8. Sayali Satghare
9. Meghna Singh
10. Tanuja Kanwar
11. Kashvee Gautam

The Giants face a tough decision in choosing Beth Mooney’s opening partner, with Laura Wolvaardt and Phoebe Litchfield vying for the spot alongside the explosive Deandra Dottin.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru: The Defending Champions

RCB, led by the charismatic Smriti Mandhana, enter the tournament as defending champions but with some key players unavailable. Their likely XI:

1. Smriti Mandhana (capt)
2. Danni Wyatt-Hodge
3. S Meghana
4. Ellyse Perry
5. Richa Ghosh
6. Raghvi Bist
7. Kanika Ahuja
8. Georgia Wareham
9. Jagravi Pawar
10. Kim Garth
11. Renuka Singh

The absence of Sophie Devine and the injury concerns surrounding Ellyse Perry add an element of uncertainty to RCB’s lineup.

Key Players to Watch

Deandra Dottin: The X-Factor

Deandra Dottin’s return to international cricket has been nothing short of spectacular. Her recent form, including being West Indies’ leading run-scorer in the T20 World Cup and a strike rate of 203.70 in T20Is against Bangladesh, makes her a formidable threat with both bat and ball

Richa Ghosh: RCB’s Power-Hitter

Richa Ghosh’s ability to finish matches as a power-hitter makes her a crucial component of RCB’s middle order. Currently third on the list of most sixes in the WPL, Ghosh’s performance could be pivotal in determining RCB’s success in their title defense.

The Battle Within the Battle: Mandhana vs Gardner

One of the most intriguing aspects of this matchup is the potential face-off between Smriti Mandhana and Ashleigh Gardner. Gardner has dismissed Mandhana more times than any other bowler in Women’s T20s and ODIs. With Gardner now captaining the Giants, this personal duel adds an extra layer of excitement to the contest

Prediction and Expectations

Despite being the defending champions, RCB face an uphill battle due to the unavailability of key players like Sophie Devine, Asha Sobhana, Sophie Molineux, and Kate Cross. The Giants, with their strong lineup and home advantage, are slight favorites going into this opener
