From Teapot to Sequel — A Quick Recap
The original Wish Dragon debuted in China before launching globally on Netflix in June 2021. The story follows a college student who discovers a magical teapot housing a wish-granting dragon. It was one of three films Netflix picked up from Sony Pictures Animation during the pandemic era, alongside The Mitchells vs. The Machines and Vivo.

The numbers speak for themselves. The original was shortlisted for an Academy Award, nominated for a Golden Rooster Award, and ranked #1 on Netflix’s global animation chart with over 150 million views. Even years later, it still averages around 16.42 million views every six months on the platform. whats-on-netflix
That’s not a movie — that’s a phenomenon with a fanbase still very much alive.
What’s New in Wish Dragon 2?
The sequel was officially revealed at the 2025 Golden Rooster Film Promotion Event, where Base Media’s CEO Chris Bremble presented the first look. The studio confirmed the film targets a Summer 2027 release and is being led by the original U.S.-China creative team. whats-on-netflix
According to the studio, Wish Dragon 2 will bring fully upgraded visuals, deeper storytelling, expanded worldbuilding, and exciting new characters — everything fans hoped for and more.
Will Wish Dragon 2 Come to Netflix?
Here’s where it gets interesting. Unlike the first film, which was a partnership with Sony Pictures Animation, the sequel is currently going ahead independently — with Sony out of the project for now, though they’re “waiting to see how it goes.”
Bremble explained that the team is trying to “own what we do as opposed to doing it for some pretty clients,” and confirmed that financing for the film is fully complete.
So Netflix isn’t officially attached yet — but given that the streamer holds rights to the original Wish Dragon through 2031 and the film’s massive ongoing viewership, a Netflix deal for the sequel would make perfect commercial sense. Watch this space.
Interestingly, Wish Dragon 2‘s director Chris Appelhans also co-created KPOP Demon Hunters — Netflix’s biggest animated movie ever. For more updates on this and other major streaming releases, check out our latest entertainment coverage at TechnoSports.
The original Wish Dragon is a beautiful example of Chinese-American co-production in animation — a genre that’s rapidly growing in global appeal.
