The Curse — A Quick Recap

In a flashback set in 1702, explorer Richard Warren establishes the first colony on the island and makes a demonic pact. Anyone born on Widow’s Bay cannot leave alive — and the only way to end the covenant is to wipe out Warren’s entire bloodline.

Tom, his assistant Patricia, and true believer Wyck discover throughout the season that the off vibes originate with this pact, which includes troublesome terms like those born on the island being unable to leave on pain of death.

The Gut-Punch Twist

Tom believes Ruth is the last living descendant of Richard Warren. Desperate to free his son Evan from the island’s curse, he secretly poisons Ruth’s medication. As she grows weak, she reveals a decades-old secret — she had an affair, became pregnant, and gave the child away to be raised by the father and his wife. “She had a nice childhood. They loved her,” Ruth says warmly. That child grew up to be Lauren — Tom’s dead wife. Which means Evan, Tom’s son, is the last living Warren descendant.

In other words, to break the curse, Tom would have to kill his own child.

Tom instantly regrets his actions and tries to rush Ruth to the hospital. Meanwhile, Sheriff Bechir, acting on Patricia’s tip that Ruth is the final descendant, shoots her — unaware of what Ruth just revealed to Tom.

Did Tom Break the Curse?

No. In the final scene, Tom hears the church bells toll eight times — a sinister signal that the island is now demanding eight lives to honour the pact. Whether Tom will ever reveal Evan’s true identity as the real last living descendant remains the show’s central cliffhanger heading into Season 2.

Archival footage discovered by Dale in the storm bunker also revealed a chilling truth — a local committee systematically selected vulnerable targets for human sacrifice, with victims kept terrified because the demonic entity fed on fear.

What’s Next in Season 2?

Creator Katie Dippold has confirmed there is “a lot to explore in the island,” adding that there was plenty of material they couldn’t yet use in Season 1. Apple TV+ has already signed a multi-year deal with her. Yahoo!
