If a video game — especially a first-person shooter, an open-world title, or anything in VR — leaves you feeling queasy, dizzy, or headachy after playing, you’re not imagining it and you’re not alone. It’s a real, well-studied phenomenon called gaming motion sickness (a type of cybersickness), and it’s more common than most players realize.

Why Do Video Games Make Me Feel Nauseous or Dizzy?

The core cause: a mismatch between your eyes and your inner ear

Your brain figures out balance and motion by combining signals from your eyes, your inner ear (the vestibular system), and your body’s sense of position. When you play a game with fast camera movement, your eyes tell your brain “we’re moving” — sweeping landscapes, running, turning corners — but your inner ear and body, which are actually sitting still on a couch, say “we’re not moving at all.” That mismatch is what triggers the nausea, similar to how reading in a moving car causes motion sickness.

What makes it worse

Some game and player factors make this mismatch more intense:

  • Field of view (FOV) — a narrow FOV can make fast on-screen motion feel more disorienting; many games let you widen it in settings.
  • Camera shake and head-bob — visual effects that simulate footsteps or impacts add extra unpredictable motion your inner ear never feels.
  • Frame rate and input lag — lower frame rates or delayed response between your controller input and what you see on screen worsen the mismatch.
  • VR headsets — because VR fills your entire field of vision, the visual-vestibular mismatch is far stronger than on a regular screen, which is why VR sickness is especially common.
  • Individual sensitivity — some people are simply more prone to motion sickness in general (cars, boats, amusement rides), and that same sensitivity carries over to games.

What actually helps

A few adjustments genuinely reduce symptoms for most players:

  • Widen the in-game field of view if the option exists
  • Turn off camera shake, head-bob, and motion blur in settings
  • Play in a well-lit room and take breaks every 20–30 minutes
  • Sit farther from the screen, or use a fixed “vignette” comfort setting in VR games
  • Stop before symptoms get bad — pushing through tends to make it worse, not better

The takeaway

Gaming-induced nausea isn’t a sign anything is wrong with you — it’s a well-documented sensory mismatch between what your eyes see and what your inner ear feels, and it’s manageable with the right settings and breaks rather than something players just have to push through.
