If you’ve watched even a few overs of cricket, you’ve seen it: a bowler or fielder throwing the ball, catching it back, and immediately rubbing it hard against their thigh or trouser leg. It’s constant, almost automatic — and it’s one of the most important small habits in the sport.

Why Do Cricketers Rub the Ball on Their Trousers?

It’s called “shining the ball” — and it changes how it moves

Cricket balls have one shiny, polished side and one rough side. Fielding teams work hard to keep one side of the ball as smooth and shiny as possible for as long as possible — usually by rubbing it repeatedly against clothing, sometimes with a little sweat or saliva added (within what the rules currently allow). Keeping one side shiny while the other side naturally roughens up creates an imbalance in the ball’s surface.

Why the imbalance matters: swing bowling

That shiny-side-vs-rough-side imbalance is what allows fast bowlers to make the ball “swing” — curve sideways in the air as it travels toward the batter. Air flows more smoothly over the shiny side and more turbulently over the rough side, and that difference in airflow pulls the ball’s path slightly off a straight line. A well-shined ball in skilled hands can swing enough to beat a batter completely, especially in the first 15–20 overs of an innings when the ball is newer.

Who does the polishing, and how

It’s typically a team effort — whichever fielder gets the ball after a throw will often give it a couple of rubs on the way back to the bowler, and the bowler themselves will polish it further just before their run-up. Some fielders specialize in it and are given the job specifically because of how consistently they maintain the shine.

Why the rules around this are strict

Because ball condition has such a big effect on bowling, cricket’s laws are strict about what’s allowed. Rubbing the ball on clothing and using natural sweat is legal; using artificial substances (mints, sunscreen, or deliberately roughening one side with an object) is ball-tampering and has led to major scandals and bans in international cricket.

The takeaway

That constant rubbing of the ball on trousers isn’t a nervous habit — it’s a legal, skillful part of the game aimed at keeping one side of the ball shiny, which is what lets fast bowlers generate swing and threaten batters with a moving ball.
