Who is the Best Athlete in Commonwealth Games history?

Who is the Best Athlete in Commonwealth Games history? Some athletes chase records. Emma McKeon simply redefines what’s possible in the pool. Nearly a century since the Commonwealth Games began in Hamilton in 1930, the Australian swimming sensation stands alone as the most decorated athlete in the competition’s history — a legacy built one relay, one gold medal, one extraordinary Games at a time.

A Career Built for Greatness

McKeon made her Commonwealth Games debut in Glasgow in 2014, winning six medals including four golds across freestyle and medley relays. Four years later at the Gold Coast, she claimed her first individual 100m butterfly title and defended three team golds, though her 200m freestyle crown slipped to bronze.

The Birmingham Masterclass

Her defining moment arrived at the 2022 Birmingham Games, where McKeon claimed a staggering eight medals in a single edition, six of them gold, across the 50m freestyle, 50m butterfly and four relay events — a haul that pushed her career tally to a record 20 Commonwealth Games medals.

An Olympic Great Too

McKeon’s dominance isn’t confined to the Commonwealth Games — she’s also Australia’s most decorated Olympic swimmer, with 11 Olympic medals including six golds, cementing her place among the finest swimmers of her generation.

Why It Matters

As the Commonwealth Games return in future editions, McKeon’s 20-medal benchmark stands as the target for the next generation of athletes to chase. Full records and event schedules are available on the official Commonwealth Games website.
