Malayalam cinema had every reason to be excited. Patriot, directed by Mahesh Narayanan, brought together two of the industry’s greatest icons — Mammootty and Mohanlal — after nearly 18 years. Backed by a stellar ensemble including Fahadh Faasil, Nayanthara, Kunchacko Boban, and Revathy, the spy thriller arrived on May 1 with sky-high expectations. What followed, however, was a cautionary tale that no amount of star power could rewrite.

Patriot Box Office: The Numbers Tell a Painful Story

The film opened to a solid ₹8 crore on Day 1, riding the wave of the legendary reunion. But after a promising opening weekend, it simply couldn’t sustain momentum.

Week	Kerala Gross Collection
Week 1	₹24.75 crore
Week 2	₹4.00 crore
Remaining Run	₹0.50 crore
Total Lifetime	₹29.25 crore

The second week saw a brutal 90% decline, adding only ₹4 crore before the film crawled through its final days to a lifetime total of ₹29.25 crore in Kerala alone. Mounted at a massive budget, the losses for producers are substantial.

What Went Wrong?

Honestly? The story. Audiences today are smarter and less forgiving — they’ll show up for the stars, but they won’t stay silent when the script lets them down. Despite the dream cast and immense pre-release buzz built around the reunion of Mammootty and Mohanlal after nearly two decades, average word-of-mouth quickly killed the film’s theatrical run.

According to Wikipedia’s overview of Malayalam cinema, the industry has produced some of India’s most critically acclaimed content — making a misfire at this scale even more surprising.

Meanwhile, Mohanlal’s Drishyam 3 is simultaneously running strong at over ₹83 crore, proving the superstar’s audience connection remains unbroken — when the script delivers.
