Mammootty and Mohanlal’s Patriot Is Coming to ZEE5 — and the Story Behind It Is More Relevant Than Ever

Two of Malayalam cinema’s greatest icons on screen together, in a film about surveillance, state power, and one man’s impossible choice between conscience and survival. Patriot is now confirmed for OTT, and if you missed it in theatres, your wait is almost over.

Patriot OTT Release: All the Details

What Is Patriot About?

Patriot centres on Dr. Daniel James (Mammootty), a scientist who stumbles upon a terrifying truth — a spyware called Periscope is being weaponised by powerful people and a private corporation called Shakthi Solutions to surveil, blackmail, and control ordinary citizens. After a minister who warns him about the conspiracy is found dead, Daniel steals the classified data, leaks it online as the alias “Vimathan” (The Dissident), and flees to London.

Two years later, he’s still fighting — through a YouTube channel and a growing resistance — backed by retired Colonel Rahim Naik and former Air Force officer Michael Devassy. The film builds to a moral reckoning: when the system refuses to be held accountable, how far does a patriot go? The ending — Daniel taking his own life using the same nerve poison used on the women whose deaths he couldn’t prevent — is quietly devastating.

It’s a story that sits squarely in the tradition of political thriller cinema, where the personal and the political collide to ask the hardest questions about power and conscience.

A Cast That Speaks for Itself

Beyond Mammootty and Mohanlal’s rare reunion on screen, Patriot assembles a genuinely remarkable ensemble. Fahadh Faasil, Nayanthara, Kunchacko Boban, Revathi, and Darshana Rajendran all appear in key roles — making this one of the most talent-dense Malayalam films in recent memory. Director Mahesh Narayanan, known for his sharp political instincts, wrote, directed, and co-edited the film himself, with music by Sushin Shyam.
